Isabel Ortiz, a senior at Davis High School, has been a student of Julie Hochman since the age of 7. She is currently principal cellist of the Davis Senior High School Symphony, and principal cellist of the University of California Davis Symphony. This year, she also served as principal cellist of the Solano Symphony in their performance of Handel’s Messiah at the Vacaville Cultural Center.
In 2006, she won the American String Teacher’s Association Contemporary Music Competition, and in 2008 was a finalist in the ensemble division of the Mondavi Center Young Artist’s Competition. A past member of Sacramento Youth Symphony Premier Orchestra, she has also participated in various Sacramento Youth Symphony chamber music workshops, and was a soloist at the U.C. Davis Cello Festival in 2007.
She has played in various master classes with visiting cellists, including David Russell, Andy Luchansky, Sarah Finney, David Russell, Stephen Harrison, Ruslan Biryukov, the Cypress String Quartet and Sylvia Luna. Isabel is also captain of the Davis Senior High School Debate Team, President of Peer Helping Club and President of Young Musician’s Outreach Club, where she organizes performances at retirement centers and elementary schools in the community.
